Dams
- Definition
A dam is a structure that is constructed to divert or hold back water of a stream, river, or lake for a specific purpose, e.g., hydroelectricity, water storage, or flood control. These structures impede the ability of fish to travel upstream unless there is a fishway installed on the structure. In the CABD, dams are defined as: small dams (i.e., having a height of less than 5 m), medium dams (i.e., having a height between 5 and 15 m), and large dams (i.e., having height of 15 m or greater, or a height between 5 m and 15 m that impounds more than 3 million m3).
Currently, the CABD dams layer also includes other types of structures, including weirs, powerhouses, spillways, canals, and lateral structures (e.g., embankments or saddle dams). Some of these structures don’t necessarily fragment freshwater systems in the upstream-downstream plane. As such, these structures should not be used for connectivity network analyses or barrier prioritization exercises. These data points can be filtered out using the Used for Network Analysis field (``use_analysis = false`` in the data).- Attributes

Code Name Description 1 Dam - Arch A structure, typically made of concrete, that is curved to form a horizontal arch with its convex side in the upstream direction. 2 Dam - Buttress A buttress dam, sometimes referred to as a hallow dam, is a structure made of concrete or masonry that consists of inclined panels or a series of arches supported by buttresses on its downstream side. 3 Dam - Embankment A structure constructed by building up and compacting several layers of excavated earth and/or rock. This category includes causeways. 4 Dam - Gravity A structure, typically made of concrete and/or masonry, that relies on the weight of its materials to withstand external forces. 5 Dam - Multiple Arch A buttress dam composed of a series of multiple arches. 6 Dam - Other The type of dam is known, but is different than those defined in this table (e.g., arch-gravity, sheet pile, timber crib, etc.). 7 Weir A type of low-head dam that allows the flow of water over the top of or underneath the structure. A weir may be used to raise the water level upstream, regulate flow, or divert flow from the system. 8 Spillway A structure that allows for the emergency or controlled release of surplus water downstream of a dam or other barrier structure. 9 Powerhouse A hydro power facility structure that houses generators and turbines used for generating hydropower. 10 Lateral Barrier A structure that is used to regulate or hold back water. Some lateral barrier structures, such as dikes and embankments, run parallel to a body of water and are used to hold back flood waters. Other lateral barriers, like canals, are used to convey water for a specific purpose such as irrigation or navigation. 11 Lock A structure, consisting of gates, used on navigable waterways to regulate (raise/lower) the water depth on a stretch of river or stream so vessels may pass. 12 Aboiteau/ Tide Gate A gate structure used in coastal areas (e.g., marshland), commonly built into an earthen dike or embankment, that permits floodwater to drain during low tide but prevents the overflow of water during high tide. 13 Other The type of structure is known, but is different than those defined in this table (e.g., intake structure, lake control structure, etc.). 99 Unknown The type of structure is unknown.

Code Name Description 1 Cross-flow An impulse turbine used in smaller hydroelectric sites with power outputs between 5 and 100 kW. Known also as Banki-Mitchell or Ossberger turbines. 2 Francis A reaction (propeller) turbine commonly used in medium- or large-scale hydroelectric plants for head heights as low as 2 m and as high as 300 m. 3 Kaplan A reaction (propeller) turbine with axial-flow and adjustable blades. Most useful for use in dams with large volumes of flow. 4 Pelton An impulse turbine commonly used in facilities with head height greater than 300 m. 5 Other Turbine type is known, but different than those defined in this table. 99 Unknown Turbine type is unknown.

Code Name Description 1 Bridge A bridge has a deck supported by abutments (or stream banks). It may have more than one cell or section separated by one or more piers. 2 Culvert A culvert is a tunnel carrying a stream under a road or railway. A culvert may act as a bridge for traffic to pass on it. 3 Multiple Culvert A multiple culvert consists of two or more culverts at a site. Multiple culverts may be installed on wide channels or in areas with high velocities at the outlet. 4 Ford A ford is a shallow, open stream crossing, in which vehicles pass through the water. Fords may be armored to decrease erosion, and may include pipes to allow flow through the ford. 5 No Upstream Channel A site where water crosses a road through a culvert but no road-stream crossing occurs because there is no channel up-gradient of the road. This can occur at the very headwaters of a stream or where a road crosses a wetland that lacks a stream channel. 99 Unknown The crossing subtype is unknown.

Open-bottom structures generally have less impact on aquatic habitat than closed-bottom structures. 2 Closed-Bottom Structure Closed-bottom structures may include box culverts, pipe arch culverts, and pipe culverts. They may be used on public roads, forest roads, driveways and in areas where difficult terrain limits other watercourse crossing options. 3 Ford-Like Structure Ford-like structures are low-profile crossings typically used for low-traffic or intermittent use roads to facilitate crossing a stream. 4 No Crossing There is no crossing where anticipated, usually because of incorrect road or stream location on maps. 99 Unknown The crossing type is unknown.
